International Beer Day: We Busted 7 Common Beer Myths For You!

Beer – the golden nectar that makes average karaoke singers believe they’re Beyonce’s replacement! The drink has allegedly started wars, led geo-political rivalries, AND most importantly – made your weekends slightly better! With a legacy of more than 7,000 years, the beverage comes with a lot of baggage – often filled with plenty of misconceptions and myths. From tall tales of beer bellies to the higher ‘alcohol by volume’ (ABV) of darker beers, there are plenty of myths that we’ll now bust this International Beer Day – Friday, August 1, 2025! Hop on, keep reading, and learn about beer more as we bust common beer myths for you!

7 Common Beer Myths, Busted This International Beer Day!

Beer Should Be Served Ice Cold, Always!

There’s an unexplainable joy in cracking open a chilled bottle of beer – we’re already drooling. But, did you know that your beer need not always be chilled or ice cold? While  some beers taste just better when served chilled, that’s not the hard-and-fast rule for all kinds of beer.

In general, lower ABV beers like pilsners and light lagers are best enjoyed chilled, whereas many dark beers like stouts, porters, and brown ales are best served at lower room temperatures but not exactly chilled or ice cold. This is because beer aromatics that play a big role in how beer tastes, can get trapped inside beers that are too cold.

Expensive Beer Is Always Better

All that glitters is not gold – remember this proverb you learnt in your English class? Well, that holds true for many beers as well! A hefty price tag doesn’t always guarantee good taste – sometimes that price tag can literally disappoint you with an average tasting beer. There are plenty of expensive beers like Peroni, Brewdog, and Stangen that taste exceptionally well, but the price has got nothing to do with the taste.

In fact, there are many craft beers like those from brands like BeeYoung, Igloo, Simba, and Maka Di among others that offer similar (or better) tasting beer at much lower prices. So, to sum it up, expensive = delicious is an equation that does not always work. What works though is the use of the highest quality ingredients and meticulous crafting techniques!

Dark Beer Is Always Stronger Than Light Beer

It’s quite common to believe this beer myth because we often associate the transparency and color of spirits with how ‘strong’ they can be. However, that is not the case with beer. The color of the beer doesn’t tell you how strong it actually is – it tells you more about the brewing process and ingredients.

Different kinds of beer

Dark beers like stouts and porters may look like they’ll take you down in a few sips, but many have a lower alcohol content, sometimes even than their ‘lighter’ counterparts. The ABV of a beer is determined by three things: the yeast, the sugar content available for the yeast to convert to alcohol, and the fermentation method. So, the next time you’re picking up that glass of beer, remember to not judge the beer by its color!

Beer Tastes Better In A Bottle Than In A Can

This next beer myth we aim to bust this International Beer Day is more about perception than being an outright myth. Cans are technically better for maintaining beer freshness. They create a better anti-oxygen seal and block out light completely. Plus, they’re easier to transport and carry, thanks to lighter and more flexible materials.

However, that doesn’t mean bottles are bad for your beer! They’re cleaner, higher quality,  and many are resistant to light and oxidation. So, the bottom line is most beers are equally delicious – whether they’re served out of a bottle or a can! The key to maintaining the freshness of beer boils down to how it is stored and consumed. Store it in a cool, dark place and consume it when fresh, ideally within three months of packaging.

All Beer Tastes The Best In A Pint Glass

Beer glassware can make or break your beer drinking experience yet it is the most ignored aspect of drinking beer. The right glassware can enhance your beer flavor and aroma whereas the incorrect use of glassware can ruin it for you!

Glasses of beer

For example, tulip glasses enhance the aromas of India Pale Ales and Belgian ales whereas stein glasses work great for classic lagers. So, the understanding that beer only tastes good in a pint glass is a misconception that you should drink off with your chilled, foamy beer!

All Lagers Look And Taste The Same

We agree that most lagers are fermented in a similar way using bottom-fermenting strains of yeast and colder temperatures. Similarly, they tend to share the same top-line clean, crisp characteristics. However, just like a color has different shades and hues, the lager category is  filled with plenty of iterations, each with its distinct hue and flavor profile.

There’s pale lager that’s light, moderately hoppy, and crisp; then there’s the sunshine-hued pilsners that have a more bitter flavor. There are dark lagers that are slightly more yellower than usual lagers with flavors of toffee and caramel as well. So, to sum it up, calling all lagers the same would be huge injustice to the diverse variety the category houses in itself!

Beer Gives You A Beer Belly!

Beer has gained a notorious reputation for giving many a beer belly but this ‘belly’ isn’t caused by beer alone! It’s the calories working behind the scenes that are present in most other foods and drinks. In fact, beer contains vitamin B and antioxidants as well, meaning beer isn’t necessarily only a boozy, calorie-rich indulgence. Plus, there are many low-calorie beer options available in the market today, so you need not worry about stocking up on calories just by consuming this liquor!

Beer being poured in a glass

The belly that protrudes out is a result of all the calorie-rich food and drinks you consume before and after (and with) your beer, and not just beer. So, the next time someone calls out your innocent bottle of beer for your expanding waistline – correct them with this fact!
