Is Morpheus A Brandy Or Cognac? Origin, Ingredients And ABV

Morpheus is one of the names you'll come across in the Indian premium brandy market. It's a brand that's fairly well known for its bottle and its full amber color. It's a brand that's been around for a while and has a following in the Indian brandy market. The question that comes up quite regularly, though, is whether it's actually brandy or Cognac.

Morpheus is an Indian blended premium brandy from Radico Khaitan, not a French Cognac. It does share some of the characteristics of a Cognac, but the origins and the requirements for production are quite different. Let's take a look at Morpheus brandy, the ingredients, the alcohol %, and the expressions available in India.

Is Morpheus A Brandy Or Cognac?

Morpheus is a blended premium brandy. Brandy is a category of distilled spirit made from fermented fruit, primarily grapes. Cognac is a type of brandy which must be made in the Cognac region of France and is subject to very specific geographical and production rules.

Morpheus does contain imported aged grape eau-de-vie and so does not qualify as Cognac. The Cognac appellation is protected and you can't just call it Cognac because it contains grape spirit and it's been aged. Morpheus is an Indian brand and its official product classification is blended premium brandy.

What Is The Origin Of Morpheus Brandy?

Morpheus brandy was launched in India in 2009 by Radico Khaitan. It was a super-premium brandy and was initially launched in the southern states of India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh) where there was already a market for brandy. Distribution has since expanded to other parts of the country.

The name Morpheus comes from the Greek god of dreams, which is also why the brand's tagline is 'Dare to Dream'. It has a goblet in the bottle which is very much part of its identity. It's an Indian brand, but it uses imported aged grape spirits in the blend.

What Are The Ingredients In Morpheus Brandy?

As per Radico Khaitan, Morpheus XO is a blended premium brandy made from imported aged grape eau-de-vie. Eau-de-vie is essentially a distilled spirit made from fermented fruit and in the case of brandy, it's almost invariably grape eau-de-vie. The aged grape eau-de-vie forms the basis of the Morpheus XO.

SipDirect as a retailer lists brandy, water, and sugar as the ingredients of the Morpheus XO. Radico Khaitan has not provided the full blending formula in the manufacturer materials that we've reviewed. The precise grape varieties, the proportions of the various spirits, and the detailed production specs are therefore not confirmed in those materials.

What Is The Alcohol Percentage Of Morpheus Brandy?

Morpheus XO brandy is 42.8% ABV while the ABV of Morpheus XO Blended Rare Brandy is clearly stated at 42.8% in an official Madhya Pradesh excise document. ABV is the percentage of alcohol in the drink, so 42.8% ABV means 42.8% of the total volume is alcohol.

Morpheus Blue XO is also frequently listed as 42.8% ABV, though again the strength printed on the bottle in your state is the one you should always check. The alcohol content is a key spec of the product, but doesn't in any way determine whether it's a brandy or a Cognac.

Morpheus XO Vs Morpheus Blue XO: What Is The Difference?

Radico Khaitan have Morpheus XO and Morpheus Blue XO as separate expressions in their premium brandy range. The classic Morpheus XO has fruity and floral aromas with notes of dried fruit such as raisins, prunes and a flavor profile of mature wood, vanilla, and a long finish.

Morpheus Blue XO is the more premium expression in the range. The company's tasting notes describe it as having dried fruit, nuts, a honey-like sweetness, oak, vanilla, and caramel. The two expressions are very much in the same ballpark in terms of what they are (Indian blended brandies rather than Cognac), yet differ in their positioning, packaging, and flavor profiles.

What Does XO Mean In Morpheus Brandy?

XO stands for Extra Old and is the term most commonly used to describe aged brandies. The meaning of the term however is dependent on the regulations of the particular spirit. In the case of Cognac, XO is a legally defined term and means that the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend has to have been aged for at least 10 years.

Morpheus XO and Morpheus Blue XO are Indian blended brandies and so Cognac's 10 year XO requirement doesn't automatically apply. Radico do describe Morpheus as an aged brandy but the manufacturer info we've looked at doesn't actually establish a verified minimum age of 10 years for either expression.

The information presented in this article has been sourced primarily from Radico Khaitan's official annual reports, brand information, and press releases, with additional references from SipDirect, government excise records, and the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC). These sources provide details on Morpheus XO Brandy's history, ingredients, alcohol content, production, and the distinction between Morpheus XO and XO Cognac.

Summing Up

Morpheus is an Indian blended premium brandy from Radico Khaitan, not Cognac. It was launched in 2009 and is made using imported aged grape eau-de-vie. It's an Indian product in the Indian premium brandy segment. It's not Cognac as Cognac has to be from a certain part of France and meet certain geographical and production criteria.

Morpheus XO has a documented alcohol strength of 42.8% ABV, while Morpheus Blue XO is a separate expression in the portfolio. Both carry the XO designation, but neither should be confused with French Cognac or assumed to follow Cognac's legally defined aging requirements.
