While there are certain obvious challenges resulting from that, there are also certain other, less obvious challenges that stem from it. Alcohol in champagne, wines, and sparkling wines comes from the sugar content in the grapes. During the process of fermentation, yeast turns the sugar into alcohol. Months of high heat and drought lead vineyards to develop grapes that are unusually rich in sugar content. This unusually high sugar content then yields unusually high alcohol content.

The alcohol content in the current batch is estimated to be around 15 percent. This is the highest alcohol content that Champagne in France has ever had, making the current batch the strongest one in its history.
Typically, Champagne Houses have to comply with strict guidelines when it comes to the alcohol content of Champagne. It is typically around 13 percent. However, the National Origin and Quality Institute of France has signed off on this one-time exception.

A number of wine producers have expressed concern over the high alcohol content. One of their major worries is that this would put off consumers from buying it, especially considering the fact that there is an increasing push toward low-alcohol wines.
It is also important to note that only a few producers will apparently be affected by this climate change. What is more, in order to offset the alcohol content, some producers are also considering mixing the latest batch with a previous 11 percent batch.
This year’s grape yield will hit the shelves as champagne in around 2028 owing to the minimum fermentation period, which is 15 months.
