Named ‘Madhuca: The Heritage Editions’, it is crafted at South Seas Distilleries, makers of India’s oldest single malts. Let’s take a dive into this unique breakthrough that will mark a new chapter in contemporary Indian whisky-making.
Crazy Cock Indian Single Malt Whisky launched ‘Madhuca: The Heritage Editions’ on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. Helmed by South Seas Distilleries, which has a distilling legacy spanning over a century, this is the very first time in history that the distillery has matured India’s oldest spirit – mahua or mahura – in oak casks alongside the country’s finest single malt.
The result? You have the world’s first matured mahua spirit as well as Heritage Editions of Crazy Cock Single Malt finished in oak casks that once held mahua spirits.
The matured mahua spirit has been launched as a rare collector’s bottle, retailing at INR 1.02 lakh and limited to just 102 bottles. While it is certainly commendable that the distillery has been able to achieve the world’s first matured mahua, we’ll be focusing on the mahua cask-finished single malts in this article.
The Heritage Editions unveiled by Crazy Cock are rooted in tradition and reflect the exquisite craftsmanship passed down through generations. This collection is made up of three expressions drawn from select oak casks. Each of these expressions stands out, revealing different facets of the Indian terroir and the creative philosophy that has guided South Seas Distilleries.

The inspiration for the Mahua finish stems from the delicate Mahua flower, an ancient flowering tree revered in the Vedas. Long associated with and worshipped by the tribal communities of India, the mahua tree finds both spiritual and functional significance in these communities.
Perhaps what the flower is most notably known for is its role in crafting the mahua spirit – India’s own and oldest spirit that was once categorized as ‘country liquor’ in colonial times. While this tag maligned its name and dismissed the craftsmanship behind it, South Seas Distilleries has played a major role in reviving this once-lost heritage spirit.
